About scandinavi.ca

The intercontinental traveler

We developed our Finnmark flatbed camper system for the travelers who want to go further. Long term intercontinental overland travel is what we are passionate about and a well built habitat and vehicle combination is a terrific way to explore the world. The idea is simple: A lightweight and durable demountable habitat along with the carrier vehicle can be shipped together in one container anywhere in the world you want to visit. This is safer and often quicker than RORO shipping(roll on/roll off)

Structural misconceptions

There is no shortage of big and comfortable campers in North America. However, it seems very few manufacturers pay any consideration to weight and quality. A surprising amount of leading RV manufacturers still base camper structure on the same principles as housing construction using materials such as soft-woods and steel, wrapped in standard size sheets of aluminium or fibreglass, leaving behind thermal bridging creating condensation and mold and an unnecessary amount of joints requiring annual attention. While the main purpose of a house and a camper are the same; to protect us from the elements, the application could not be more different: Static vs. dynamic stress factors. It is astounding how few in the industry understand the abuse a mobile structure must be able to endure, where traditional methods and materials of construction just don't cut it.

A camper is for many a major purchase, and it shouldn't be a constant headache and worry. We believe in the strength of structural simplicity.

But why the flatbed?

A body-on-frame vehicle is durable in part due to its' flexibility. Cab and bed are typically seperate which allows the frame to flex with the terrain. In other words: the frame is an essential part of the vehicle's suspension and must not be restricted. 90% of pickup manufacturers mount cab on flexible cab mounts while mounting the bed directly to the frame of the vehicle. The bed material typically ranges from sheet metals to composites which flex along with the frame. This is no problem until a traditional camper covered in material overlaps/joints is expected to endure the same dynamics hour after hour.

This is where our rigid flatbeds come in. Our flatbeds are isolated from the frame by flexible cab mounts which can allow up to 1.2 inches of diagonal frame flex (80") while keeping the flatbed and camper completely safe from torsion and vibrations.
